Computer forensics is a relatively new field of study.  Many of the conceptions that we hold about computer forensics are fiction learned from TV or the movies.  The training and certifications for computer forensic "experts" vary from company to company, agency to agency, and state to state.  Topics that will be covered include:

·         What is computer forensics and what are the true capabilities of an examination

·         How does computer forensics differ from e-Discovery?

·         Information you should know if your case involves digital media.

·         Specific examples of where to find "the smoking gun".

·         Current and future issues in the computer forensics field.

About the Speaker

Jim Sevel, is a Computer Forensics Agent with over 30 years of law enforcement experience with the U.S. Custom Service (USCS) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).   Jim was a Plank-holder (one of the original Computer Forensic Examiners) at the San Diego Regional Computer Forensics Laboratory, a multi-agency task force administered by the FBI.  He was also a supervisor of the Cyber Investigations and Computer Forensics Group for the USCS and DHS.  Over the years Jim has been certified as a Computer Forensic Examiner by the Department of the Treasury, the Federal Bureau of Investigations, the Department of Homeland Security, and various private/public organizations.  Jim has testified on computer forensic issues in federal, state, and military courts.  He retired in 2006 but was re-hired by the DHS as a Computer Forensic Agent in 2008.  Shortly after his 2006 retirement, Jim started San Diego Computer Forensics LLC (SDCF).  He is the owner and lead examiner at SDCF; a company with the goal of providing experience and professionalism to the civil litigation community.
